89 is an informal “art salon” where Midway Studios residents get together to share their art.

Nick Thorkelson is a cartoonist, illustrator, painter/drawer and musician. His drawings have appeared in The Boston Globe, Radical America, and The Real Paper, a series of nonfiction comics anthologies, as well as publications of advocacy campaigns in the fields of public health, the environment, and economic justice. He is the author of the comics biographies Herbert Marcuse, Philosopher of Utopia (City Lights Books, 2019) , and If I Could But See It: William Morris in His Time (forthcoming from Pluto Press). Nick played keyboards in Jamaica Hylton, Boston’s first reggae band, and the soul band Six of One. Living in the Fort Point arts community from 2007 to 2019 provided him opportunities to create installation art and show his watercolors and posters, perform weekly at Brian Bresnahan’s <<Someday>>(should be Internal Matter?) Restaurant, and participate in the Fort Point Theatre Channel troupe of which he was a founding member. In FPTC he acted, designed sets and publicity materials, wrote music and lead the band in a series of shows, and created animated films. Studying William Morris and living at the tip of Cape Cod since 2019 has turned Nick into a socialist aesthete, which is not a contradiction in terms at all.
